Simple Mindfulness Practice for Daily Life

September 12, 2022

When you think of mindfulness, you might picture sitting in easy pose on a mat in deep meditation with incense in the air. Sitting in a quiet place alone with your thoughts is part of a mindfulness practice, but definitely not the whole picture.

Our days are busy- work, children, family commitments, looking after your home, car and pets, errands, must-do tasks and now adding on the digital clutter of today’s online society.

Mindfulness is being conscious or aware of things in our life. Our brain and body reacts and responds emotionally to situations around us like last-minute deadlines, encounters with others and new experiences. A mindfulness practice encourages you to expand into what you’re feeling on any given day at any given moment. It allows you to recognize these emotions and respond in a compassionate and productive way!

Getting Started

It’s not all about sitting in meditation (although meditation is important and highly beneficial). Start your mindfulness journey by thinking simply.

A good example, you’re brushing your teeth, what are you thinking about? Take some deep, cleansing breaths and notice what’s going on around and inside you.

Does your mind feel full of clutter?

Are you thinking about the past or the future?

Be the observer of these thoughts and watch them pass by. Focus in on each task at hand. Feel the sensation of the toothbrush, ground down in the moment.

That beats walking around on autopilot like arriving at your destination without remembering the drive or finding yourself with your hand at the bottom of a chip bag you only meant to snack a little from.”

Meditation

It’s an incredibly powerful aspect of mindfulness.

Start with a quiet space to sit and be alone for a few moments. Notice how your body feels. Begin connecting with your breath with deep, slow inhales and exhales.

Now, attempt to clear your mind and just focus on your breath.

Remember that there is no way to truly quiet your mind and that’s not the goal here. All you want to do is pay attention to the present moment, without judgment. It sounds a lot easier than it is but if you can notice that your mind has wandered and consciously bring it back to the present moment- and then keep doing it, then that is enough. The more you do this, the more you train your brain and the more likely you will be able to do it again and again.

You may find a guided meditation on YouTube, a podcast or app is a helpful tool with meditation. With a little time and dedication, you’ll be on your way to a more mindful existence.

Gratitude

"Ultimately being mindful will lead us to making beneficial choices for ourselves and others.

It will allow us to prioritize what is important for us and eliminate clutter from our busy lives."

A Note from Ambaya to You

"Ultimately being mindful will lead us to making beneficial choices for ourselves and others. It will allow us to prioritize what is important for us and eliminate clutter from our busy lives. The most profound manner in which I have found will keep me being mindful is two fold:

1. Be grateful for everything that shows up and find the gem in it if it is not to your liking.

2. Remember who you are feeding, who is breathing you, who is really enjoying the tasty meals, who is really feeling your joy or your pain. Who is talking, who is listening, who is maintaining this aliveness within your Being?

If we can be very respectful to That then, we will be grateful and feed it the most nutritious foods. Keep ourselves clean and looking beautiful. We will speak to each other with respect and we will be grateful for having each other in our lives. We will want to feel really good and not react with anger so as to spare that Being that created us and which is constantly animating us. Yes, the inner dweller, the God Within is who we are always interacting with experiencing our lives.

Let's Enjoy every minute and be grateful. That is being mindful!"
